In Washington, Christine Kendal gets unwelcome visitors at her home; naval officers in dress uniform. She is told that the Colorado was attacked and sunk by the Pakistani navy with all hands presumed dead. Soon afterwards the US launches nuclear strikes against Pakistan.
Sam calls Christine at home and the Navy monitor their conversation. He is able to tell her that he loves her but they are cut off. She is amazed that the navy lied to her about his death. The US launches bombers to destory the Colorado. Chaplin fires a nuclear warhead at the US when the bombers will not turn back. The bombers then turn back and Chaplin's missile detonates in the Atlantic Ocean 200 miles east of Washington. Chaplin releases a video message declaring the island of Sainte Marina his territory and threatening to attack anyone who violates a 200 mile perimeter around it.
Christine is held and questioned by the government about her husband's actions. Dodds and Pilgrim show her a video of Sam being debriefed after rescue from a North Korean Prisoner of War camp. Sam kept his captivity secret and they try to use the deception to drive a wedge between them. Christine calls Sam, feigning cooperation with the government. She urges him not to trust them and is then cut off. Pilgrim and Dodds have an old friend of Sam's named Paul Wells pose as a concerned attorney to get close to Christine.
