China (Simplified Chinese: 中国; traditional Chinese: 中國; pinyin: Zhōngguó), officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state located in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a single-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing), and two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau). The PRC also claims Taiwan – which is controlled by the Republic of China (ROC), a separate political entity – as its 23rd province, a claim which is controversial due to the complex political status of Taiwan.

Originally, the Soviet Union and China were allied but both eventually went their own ways in 1969. The United States of America recognized the People's Republic in 1972 when former president Richard Nixon visited the country. Since then, China became America's economic rival, trade partner, and rival pivot in the Asia-Pacific Region.

Although not enemies nor allies, there has been some degree of tension between the United States such as the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis of 1995-1996, the NATO bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade in 1999 (due to poor intelligence), and the collision with a Chinese J-8 fighter jet and a US EP-3 Orion spy plane, also known as the Hainan Island incident. China also has territorial disputes with India to the south; Japan and South Korea to the East China Sea; Russia and Mongolia to the north; and Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam, Philippines, and Taiwan to the South China Sea.

Currently, China is the second largest economy in the world, replacing Japan and soon predicted to catch up with the USA.
